In order to make best out of this course, we suggest and assume the students have prerequisite knowledge about the following topics:

1.0 Software and its characteristics

Software refers to a set of instructions and data instructing a computer to perform specific tasks or operations. It is a collection of programs, algorithms, and data that enables a computer system to execute various functions and provide a platform for user interaction.
Characteristics of Software:
  1. Intangibility: Software is intangible, meaning it cannot be touched or physically handled. It exists in the form of code and data stored on electronic devices.
  1. Flexibility: Software can be easily modified and updated. Changes can be made to the code to introduce new features, fix bugs, or improve performance without physical alterations.
  1. Functionality: Software provides functionality to perform specific tasks or solve particular problems. It encompasses various applications, from operating systems and utilities to business applications and games.
  1. Abstraction: Software abstracts the underlying hardware, allowing users and developers to interact with the computer system without understanding the intricate details of the hardware architecture.
  1. Scalability: Software can be scaled to accommodate varying workloads and user requirements. This scalability is achieved through modifications, updates, or adding new features.
  1. Portability: Software can be designed to run on different hardware platforms or operating systems with minimal or no modification. This characteristic allows users to use the same software on various devices.
  1. Reliability: Reliable software performs its intended functions consistently and predictably. It minimizes errors, crashes, and unexpected behavior's, providing a stable and trustworthy environment.
  1. Maintainability: Software can be easily maintained through updates, patches, and bug fixes. Good software design facilitates ease of maintenance by separating concerns and making the codebase modular.
  1. Usability: Usable software is designed with the end user in mind. It includes features such as a user-friendly interface, clear documentation, and intuitive interactions to enhance the user experience.
  1. Security: Software must address security concerns to protect data, prevent unauthorized access, and ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information.
  1. Cost-Effectiveness: Developing and maintaining software involves costs, and cost-effectiveness is an important consideration. Efficient software design and development practices aim to maximize benefits while minimizing expenses.
  1. Interoperability: Software should be able to interact and work seamlessly with other software components or systems. Interoperability is crucial for integrating diverse applications and creating comprehensive solutions.

1.2 Software Quality Attributes

Software quality attributes, also known as software quality characteristics or non-functional requirements, represent the aspects of software that determine its overall quality. These attributes are crucial for evaluating and ensuring that software meets the desired standards regarding performance, reliability, usability, and other key dimensions. Here are some common software quality attributes:
  1. Reliability:
      • Definition: The software's ability to perform consistently and predictably under various conditions.
      • Characteristics: Stability, fault tolerance, error recovery, and data integrity.
  1. Performance:
      • Definition: The responsiveness and efficiency of the software in terms of processing speed, resource utilization, and throughput.
      • Characteristics: Speed, scalability, responsiveness, and efficiency.
  1. Scalability:
      • Definition: The ability of the software to handle an increasing amount of work or users by adding resources or nodes to the system.
      • Characteristics: Vertical scalability (adding resources to a single node) and horizontal scalability (adding more nodes to a system).
  1. Maintainability:
      • Definition: The ease with which software can be modified, updated, and extended over time while minimizing errors.
      • Characteristics: Modularity, readability, extensibility, and ease of debugging.
  1. Usability:
      • Definition: The extent to which software is user-friendly and provides a positive user experience.
      • Characteristics: Intuitiveness, efficiency, learnability, and user satisfaction.
  1. Portability:
      • Definition: The ease with which software can be transferred from one environment to another, such as from one operating system to another.
      • Characteristics: Adaptability, platform independence, and compatibility.
  1. Security:
      • Definition: The protection of software against unauthorized access, data breaches, and other security threats.
      • Characteristics: Confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and authorization.
  1. Availability:
      • Definition: The percentage of time that the software is operational and available for use.
      • Characteristics: Reliability, fault tolerance, and quick recovery from failures.
  1. Testability:
      • Definition: The ease with which software can be tested to identify and fix defects.
      • Characteristics: Observability, controllability, and isolatability of components for testing.
  1. Flexibility:
      • Definition: The ability of the software to adapt to changing requirements and environments.
      • Characteristics: Configurability, modifiability, and adaptability.
  1. Interoperability:
      • Definition: The ability of software to work seamlessly with other software, hardware, or systems.
      • Characteristics: Compatibility, standard compliance, and data exchange capabilities.
  1. Compliance:
      • Definition: The adherence of the software to industry standards, regulations, and legal requirements.
      • Characteristics: Conformance to specified standards and regulatory requirements.
Understanding and addressing these software quality attributes during development is essential for delivering a high-quality software product that meets user expectations and business needs.

1.3 Software Engineering diversity

There are many types of software applications including:
  1. Stand-alone application: The applications that can run on a personal computer or apps that run on the mobile devices. They include all the necessary functionalities and may not need to be connected to network. Examples: Microsoft Office on a PC, CAD Programs, photo manipulation software etc.
  1. Embedded control systems: These are software control systems that control and manage hardware devices. Numerically, there are probably more embedded systems than any other type of system. Examples of embedded systems include the software in a mobile (cell) phone, software that controls antilock braking in a car, and software in a microwave oven to control the cooking process.
  1. Batch processing systems These are business systems that are designed to process data in large batches. They process large numbers of individual inputs to create corresponding outputs. Examples of batch systems are periodic billing systems, such as phone billing systems, and salary payment systems.
  1. Entertainment systems These are systems for personal use that are intended to entertain the user. Most of these systems are games of one kind or another, which may run on special-purpose console hardware. The quality of the user interaction offered is the most important distinguishing characteristic of entertainment systems.
  1. Systems for modeling and simulation: These are systems that are developed by scientists and engineers to model physical processes or situations, which include many separate, interacting objects. These are often computationally intensive and require high-performance parallel systems for execution.
  1. Data collection and analysis systems: Data collection systems are systems that collect data from their environment and send that data to other systems for processing. The software may have to interact with sensors and often is installed in a hostile environment such as inside an engine or in a remote location. “Big data” analysis may involve cloud-based systems carrying out statistical analysis and looking for relationships in the collected data.
  1. Systems of systems: These are systems, used in enterprises and other large organizations, that are composed of a number of other software systems. Some of these may be generic software products, such as an ERP system. Other systems in the assembly may be specially written for that environment.
  1. Interactive transaction-based applications: These are applications that execute on a remote computer and that are accessed by users from their own computers, phones, or tablets. Obviously, these include web applications such as e-commerce applications where you interact with a remote system to buy goods and services. This class of application also includes business systems, where a business provides access to its systems through a web browser or special-purpose client program and cloud-based services, such as mail and photo sharing. Interactive applications often incorporate a large data store that is accessed and updated in each transaction.

1.4 Software Architecture and client-server architecture

Software architecture refers to the high-level structure and design of a software system. It involves making key decisions about the organization of the software components, their relationships, and how they interact to achieve the desired functionality. Software architecture provides a blueprint for building and evolving a system, addressing both functional and non-functional requirements.
 
Key aspects of software architecture include:
  1. Components: Identifying and defining the major components or modules of the system.
  1. Connections: Specifying how components interact and communicate with each other.
  1. Constraints: Establishing the limitations and guidelines for the design, such as performance, scalability, and security requirements.
  1. Patterns: Utilizing design patterns and best practices to address common architectural challenges.
  1. Styles: Choosing architectural styles or paradigms that guide the overall structure, such as client-server, microservices, or monolithic architecture.
  1. Decisions: Making critical decisions about technology stack, data storage, and communication protocols.
 
Examples of Software Architecture:
  1. Client-Server Architecture:
      • Divides the application into two separate entities: the client, which requests services, and the server, which provides services.
      • The client and server communicate over a network, often using protocols like HTTP or TCP/IP.
      • Common in web applications, where the browser (client) requests resources from a web server.
  1. Microservices Architecture:
      • Decomposes the application into a set of small, independent services that communicate through APIs.
      • Each service is focused on a specific business capability and can be developed, deployed, and scaled independently.
      • Promotes flexibility, scalability, and ease of maintenance.
  1. Monolithic Architecture:
      • All components of the application are tightly integrated into a single codebase and executed as a single unit.
      • Simplifies development and deployment but may face challenges with scalability and maintainability.
  1. Event-Driven Architecture:
      • Components communicate by generating and responding to events.
      • Events trigger actions in other components, allowing for loosely coupled and reactive systems.
      • Often used in real-time applications, message queues, and event-driven systems.
  1. Layered Architecture:
      • Organizes the application into layers, such as presentation, business logic, and data access.
      • Each layer performs specific functions, and communication typically occurs only between adjacent layers.
      • Enhances modularity and maintainability.
  1. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA):
      • Organizes the application as a set of services that are loosely coupled and interact through well-defined interfaces.
      • Promotes reusability and interoperability between different components and systems.
 
Client-Server Architecture:
Client-server architecture is a common architectural pattern where the software system is divided into two major components: the client and the server.
  • Client:
    • The client is the user interface or application that interacts with the user.
    • It initiates requests for services or resources from the server.
    • In a web application, the client is often a browser that sends HTTP requests to a web server.
  • Server:
    • The server is responsible for providing services or resources requested by the client.
    • It listens for client requests, processes them, and sends back the appropriate responses.
    • Servers can handle various tasks, such as database access, business logic, or serving static files.

  1. Separation of Concerns: The client and server have distinct roles, with the client handling the user interface and the server managing the application's logic and data.

Client-server architecture is versatile and widely used in various applications, including web applications, mobile apps, and enterprise systems. It facilitates modular development, scalability, and the ability to update and maintain components independently.

1.5 Web Service:

A web service is a standardized way of integrating and communicating between software applications over the internet. It enables different systems to interact with each other, regardless of the programming languages, platforms, or technologies they are built upon. Web services use standard protocols such as HTTP, XML, or JSON for communication.
Web services can be categorized into two main types:
  1. SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) Web Services:
      • SOAP is a protocol for exchanging structured information in web services.
      • It uses XML as its message format and relies on other protocols like HTTP for message negotiation and transmission.
      • SOAP web services typically have a rigid structure defined by a WSDL (Web Services Description Language) file.
  1. RESTful (Representational State Transfer) Web Services:
      • REST is an architectural style for designing networked applications.
      • RESTful web services use standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE) to perform operations on resources.
      • They often use JSON or XML for data interchange and are known for their simplicity and scalability.
Web services play a crucial role in enabling interoperability between different software systems and facilitating the integration of diverse applications across the web. They are widely used in various domains, including e-commerce, social media, cloud computing, and IoT (Internet of Things).
 

PART-2: Software Process and SDLC

A software process, also known as a software development process or simply a development process, is a set of activities, methods, practices, and transformations that are used to develop and maintain software systems. It encompasses the entire spectrum of software development, from the initial conception of an idea through to the deployment and maintenance of the software product.
Different software processes may adopt or adapt specific SDLC models that align with their principles and goals. An approach to creating a software product is usually regarded as the “software development life cycle” (SDLC), also known as the “application development life cycle,” or simply the “software development process.”

SDLC is a structured process used by software development teams to design, develop, and test high-quality software efficiently. It consists of several phases, each with its own set of activities, deliverables, and goals.
 
1. Planning
  • Initial phase where project scope, objectives, and requirements are defined.
  • Stakeholder collaboration to determine project feasibility, timelines, and resource allocation.
2. Requirement Analysis
  • Gathering and analyzing user requirements.
  • Documenting functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Creating use cases and user stories.
3. Design
  • Architectural design: defining system architecture, components, and their interactions.
  • Detailed design: specifying system modules, interfaces, and data structures.
4. Implementation (Coding)
  • Actual coding of the software based on the design specifications.
  • Follows coding standards and best practices.

5. Testing

  • Types of testing include unit testing, integration testing, system testing, and acceptance testing.

  • Post-deployment phase focusing on software maintenance and support.

Advantages of SDLC:

  • Ensures systematic and structured approach to software development.
  • Facilitates better project management, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Enhances communication and collaboration among project stakeholders.
  • Results in high-quality software that meets user requirements and expectations.

Disadvantages of SDLC:

  • Can be time-consuming and rigid, especially in traditional waterfall models.
  • Difficulty in accommodating changing requirements during later stages.
  • May require significant upfront planning and documentation.
 
SDLC provides a framework for software development that helps ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable, and maintainable software products. By following a structured approach and incorporating best practices, development teams can efficiently navigate through each phase of the SDLC to deliver successful software solutions.
 

2.1 Scrum

Scrum is an Agile framework used for managing complex projects. It emphasizes collaboration, flexibility, and iterative development. Here are some key points about Scrum:
  1. Roles: Scrum defines three primary roles:
      • Product Owner: Represents the stakeholders and defines the product vision and priorities.
      • Scrum Master: Facilitates the Scrum process, removes impediments, and ensures the team adheres to Scrum principles.
      • Development Team: Cross-functional team responsible for delivering increments of working software.
  1. Artifacts:
      • Product Backlog: A prioritized list of features, enhancements, and fixes maintained by the Product Owner.
      • Sprint Backlog: A subset of items from the Product Backlog selected for implementation during a sprint.
      • Increment: A potentially shippable product increment created during a sprint.
  1. Events:
      • Sprint: A time-boxed iteration, typically lasting 1-4 weeks, where the Development Team works to deliver a potentially releasable product increment.
      • Sprint Planning: Meeting at the start of a sprint where the team selects items from the Product Backlog and creates a plan for delivering them.
      • Daily Scrum: Daily stand-up meetings where the Development Team synchronizes activities, discusses progress, and identifies any obstacles.
      • Sprint Review: Meeting at the end of a sprint where the team demonstrates the completed work to stakeholders and receives feedback.
      • Sprint Retrospective: Meeting at the end of a sprint where the team reflects on their processes and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  1. Iterative Development: Scrum promotes an iterative and incremental approach to development, allowing for frequent inspection and adaptation.
  1. Self-Organization: Development Teams are self-organizing and cross-functional, empowering them to make decisions and collaborate effectively.
  1. Transparency and Inspection: Scrum promotes transparency through shared artifacts and events, allowing stakeholders to inspect progress and adapt as needed.
  1. Empirical Process Control: Scrum is based on the principles of empiricism, where decisions are made based on observation, experimentation, and data.
  1. Scalability: While originally designed for small, co-located teams, Scrum can be scaled for larger projects using frameworks like Nexus, LeSS, or SAFe.
Overall, Scrum provides a flexible and adaptive framework for managing complex projects, enabling teams to deliver value iteratively and respond to changing requirements effectively.

Difference between Scrum and XP

Scrum
Extreme Programming (XP)
In the Scrum framework, teamwork in iterations is called Sprint which is 2 weeks to 1 month long.
In Extreme Programming(XP), teamwork for 1-2 weeks only.
Scrum models do not allow changes in their timeline or their guidelines.
Extreme Programming allows changes in their set timelines.

2.1.1 Scrum Artifacts

In Scrum, several artifacts are produced or used throughout the development process. These artifacts help facilitate communication, transparency, and collaboration within the team. Here is a list of key artifacts in Scrum:
  1. Product Backlog:
      • A dynamic, prioritized list of all features, enhancements, and fixes that comprise the product.
      • Maintained by the Product Owner and regularly refined.
  1. Sprint Backlog:
      • A subset of the Product Backlog selected for a specific Sprint.
      • Owned by the Development Team and represents the work they commit to completing during the Sprint.
  1. Increment:
      • The sum of all completed Product Backlog items from previous Sprints.
      • Must be in a potentially shippable state, meeting the Definition of Done.
  1. Definition of Done (DoD):
      • A shared understanding within the team of what it means for a task or user story to be considered complete.
      • Ensures consistency and quality across deliverables.
  1. Burndown Chart:
      • A visual representation of work completed versus time remaining in a Sprint.
      • Helps the team track progress and manage workload during the Sprint.
  1. Product Increment:
      • The result of a Sprint—a potentially releasable product that includes all completed items from the Sprint Backlog.
      • Reflects the progress made in each iteration.
  1. Release Burndown:
      • Similar to the Sprint Burndown, but tracks progress over the entire project or release.
      • Provides a high-level overview of how much work is remaining to achieve the release goals.
  1. Release Plan:
      • A high-level plan outlining the features and functionalities to be delivered in upcoming releases.
      • Helps stakeholders understand the project timeline and expected deliverables.
  1. Impediment Log:
      • A record of obstacles or impediments that hinder the team's progress.
      • Maintained by the Scrum Master to facilitate their removal.
  1. Sprint Goal:
      • A short, concise statement that defines the purpose of a Sprint.
      • Provides guidance to the team and aligns their efforts toward a common objective.
  1. Definition of Ready (DoR):
      • Criteria that a user story or task must meet before being pulled into a Sprint.
      • Ensures that items in the Product Backlog are well-defined and ready for implementation.
These artifacts collectively contribute to the transparency, collaboration, and successful delivery of products in an agile and Scrum environment.

2.1.2 Scrum Events

Scrum defines several events, also known as ceremonies or meetings, to structure the work and interactions within a development team. The main Scrum events are:
  1. Sprint Planning:
      • This is a time-boxed event that occurs at the beginning of each Sprint.
      • The Product Owner presents the prioritized Product Backlog items to the Development Team.
      • The Development Team selects the items it believes it can complete during the Sprint and plans the work required.
  1. Daily Scrum (Daily Standup):
      • This is a short, daily meeting typically held at the same time and place.
      • The Development Team members provide updates on their progress, discuss any obstacles, and plan their work for the day.
      • The Daily Scrum is not a status report to the Scrum Master or Product Owner; instead, it's a quick synchronization meeting for the team.
  1. Sprint Review:
      • This event takes place at the end of each Sprint.
      • The Development Team demonstrates the completed Increment to the stakeholders, including the Product Owner.
      • Feedback is gathered, and any necessary adjustments are made to the Product Backlog.
  1. Sprint Retrospective:
      • This is a team reflection meeting held at the end of each Sprint.
      • The team discusses what went well, what could be improved, and actions to take in the next Sprint.
      • The focus is on continuous improvement, and the retrospective is an opportunity to inspect and adapt the team's processes.
  1. Sprint (or Iteration):
      • A Sprint is a time-boxed period during which a potentially releasable product Increment is created.
      • Sprints typically last for two to four weeks.
      • The work for the Sprint is determined during Sprint Planning, and the team strives to deliver a valuable Increment by the end of the Sprint.
These Scrum events provide a structured framework for communication, collaboration, and adaptation within a development team. They help ensure that the team is aligned on goals, progress is visible, and continuous improvement is encouraged. The time-boxed nature of these events promotes focus and helps teams manage their work effectively.

2.2 Git / Maven / CI-CD / Build Automation

Introduction to Version Control:
  • Version control is a system that records changes to a file or set of files over time so that you can recall specific versions later.
  • It allows multiple developers to work concurrently on a project, tracking changes, and managing collaboration efficiently.
 
Why Version Control is Important:
  • Enables tracking of changes: Every change made to files is tracked, including who made the change and when.
  • Facilitates collaboration: Multiple developers can work on the same codebase simultaneously without conflicts.
  • Provides a safety net: Allows reverting to previous versions if needed, minimizing the risk of losing valuable work.
  • Supports experimentation: Developers can create branches to experiment with new features or fixes without affecting the main codebase.
 
Version Control System (VCS):
  • A Version Control System (VCS) is a software tool that manages changes to files and directories over time.
  • There are two main types of VCS: centralized and distributed.
 
Centralized VCS:
  • In a centralized VCS, such as CVS (Concurrent Versions System) or SVN (Subversion), there is a single, central repository that stores all versions of files.
  • Developers check out files from the central repository, make changes locally, and then commit those changes back to the repository.
  • Centralized VCSs are prone to single points of failure and can become bottlenecks when many developers are working concurrently.
 
Distributed VCS:
  • In a distributed VCS, such as Git, Mercurial, or Bazaar, every developer has a local copy of the entire repository.
  • Developers can work independently, commit changes to their local repository, and then synchronize those changes with remote repositories.
  • Distributed VCSs are more resilient to network failures and allow for more flexible collaboration workflows.
 

Common Concepts in Version Control:

  • Commit: Saving changes to the repository along with a descriptive message.
  • Branch: A parallel line of development that diverges from the main line (often called the "master" branch).
  • Merge: Combining changes from one branch into another.
  • Conflict: Occurs when two changes overlap and cannot be automatically merged, requiring manual resolution.
 

Popular Version Control Systems:

  1. Git: Widely used distributed VCS known for its speed, scalability, and flexibility.
  1. SVN (Subversion): Centralized VCS commonly used for managing large codebases.
  1. Mercurial: Distributed VCS similar to Git but with some differences in workflow and terminology.

Features of VCS

  1. Revision History: VCS maintains a detailed history of changes made to files over time. This includes information such as who made the change, when it was made, and what specific changes were introduced.

  1. Conflict Resolution: In cases where two or more developers make conflicting changes to the same file, VCS provides tools for identifying and resolving conflicts, ensuring that changes are integrated seamlessly.
  1. Synchronization: VCS enables synchronization of code changes across multiple repositories and development environments. This ensures that all team members have access to the latest version of the codebase and can work from a consistent starting point.
  1. Code Review: Some VCS platforms include features for conducting code reviews, allowing team members to provide feedback on proposed changes before they are merged into the main codebase.
  1. Access Control: VCS provides mechanisms for controlling access to repositories and managing permissions for different users or groups. This helps enforce security policies and ensure that only authorized individuals can make changes to the codebase.
  1. Tagging and Labeling: VCS allows developers to create tags or labels to mark specific points in the revision history, such as releases or milestones. This makes it easier to reference and retrieve specific versions of the codebase.
